A
short drive away, well past the borders of Clay County on the northern
edge of Duval County, exists Big Talbot Island State Park. While
this area is not located in Clay County, it represents an intriguing
prospect for an encounter with the closest thing to moonscape we
have available.
Sometimes
referred to as the "edge of time," the shoreline along
Big Talbot Island's northern tip presents visitors with an alternate
depiction of the typical sea-land transition. Normally, when we
think of coastline, we envision an area of sandy vegetation, buffered
by beach, and eventually transitioning into the watery edge of the
ocean. In this surreal landscape, however, soil erosion has transformed
the coast and presented the illusion that trees have grown right
out into the ocean. Their dead and dying remnants make for some
eerie scenery and provides a most unusual opportunity for the shell
hunter, the photographer and those simply wanting to take a peaceful
walk in an uncrowded natural environment.
